UNIT 1 - TECHNOLOGY AND SOCIETY

ACTIVITY Nº1:

1.1.        Look for information about the main industries in your community. Write a short report about what is produced and how technology is used for.

       Mazapan: Mazapan´s industry is one of the most important industry of Toledo. The best example is Santo Tomé which is in a lot of places of the city. It works the mazapan becarefully and makes different figures with it.

     Ceramic industry: It is characteristic from Talavera de la Reina, a village that belongs to Toledo. The people work with clay. They give different shapes to the clay and creates vases, dishes, jars, etc. At first they do the shapes by hand but now is usual to give the shapes with machines and molds.     

1.2.        Find out and write down the environmental problems that can come from those processes.

2.1. Complete the folowing table into your wordprocessor and copy-paste it into your BLOG.

3.1. Find out the opposites of these word:

a) Pull out; Pull in

3.2. Match the tools you need with the actions:

a) To cut a plywood board- saw

b) To glue two pieces of wood- glue pistol

c) To measure a board- ruler and set square

d) To sand a corner of a pieces of planks- file and sandpaper

e) To make a hole- drill

 f) To insert a nail- hammer

3.3. Write down in your blog why this actions are dangerous in a workshop:  

a) running: I think running is dangerous because you might fall.

b) jumping: I think jumping is dangerous because you can fall and hurt yourself with a tool.

c) having loose hair: I think having loose hair is dangerous because it can be caught by a machine.

d) push: I think pushing is dangerous because you can push a classmate against a machine and hurts him.

3.4. Copy and complete these sentences about health and safety.

a) "You mustn´t wear rings or having loose hair because it can get caught in the machines."

b) "You mustn´t make too much noise because there are more classes and more classmates than you."

c) "You must keep your workstation clean and tidy because is easier to work."

3.5. Match the tools you need with the actions. Use your dictionary. Copy them into your notebook and draw a picture of the tools next to the word:
